Time theft uncovered within Trenton Parks Department

A recent payroll investigation by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs found that at least 17 Trenton Parks and Recreation Department employees may have committed time theft, the Times of Trenton reports.

The newspaper obtained copies of the records, which show that some employees crossed out timeclock stamps and reported different times. Others ignored the timeclock all together and recorded all of their time and attendance information by hand.

According to a city employee interviewed by the newspaper, handwritten edits are only supposed to be made in exceptional circumstances, and must be signed or initialed by a supervisor. However, signatures or initials were not found next to any of the alterations on the time card copies.

Additionally, the investigation revealed that two park rangers had been paid for work they had done before being officially approved for employment.

Elsewhere in New Jersey, former Bridgeton postmaster Daniel Mayo was recently charged with theft of a different kind - collecting nearly $18,000 worth of paychecks made out to a retired employee.
